Central Illinois is a popular tourist destination for visitors to see the historic Abraham Lincoln sites and much more. Abraham Lincoln, our nation's 16th President, is Springfield's most celebrated citizen who lived here between 1837 and 1861. The only home Lincoln ever owned is located near the center of modern Springfield and is open to the public year round. Following his assassination, Lincoln's remains returned to Springfield and were placed in his tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery. We are also very proud of the new $150 million Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library located in downtown Springfield.
Cultural and entertainment choices include the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, the Hoogland Center for the Arts, drama and dance ensembles, museums, art galleries, and libraries. Other performances are often featured at the Prairie Capital Convention Center, Sangamon Auditorium at the University of Illinois at Springfield and the Illinois State Fair.
